For the beginning, before I start writing on exercises with the real thing and characters, I'm going to write some prompts with my favorite fandom- Pandora Hearts.
For this, there's a fine prompt-week project on tumblr. And on Day 1, there's the following exercise:
Day 1 - Favorite Character
~ We’re gonna start off with an easy prompt. Write a prompt about your favorite character.
DAY 1
LEO BASKERVILLE
To start off with an introduction, my favorite character- Leo Baskerville- is a sidecharacter from the manga "Pandora Hearts". He is introduced in the chapter "Elliot & Leo", in Volume 3.
Early on he plays a rather unimportant role as the servant of the scion of the Nighray Household. As the story progresses, Leo's master dies and Leo is shown to be the 'cause' of it. From then on he's one of the mainroles, since he's revealed to be a container for a soul that played a big role in a tragedy that played 100 years ago.
There are many reasons why I love Leo. I've loved him from the beginning, when he was introduced. He was shown to be quite silent and obedient around his master Elliot, but turned out to be really violent and not subdued at all. He always gives his opinion on everything and he constantly corrects his master's foul behavior.
Since he was a child, Leo had been seen as "strange" since he saw things that only he could see, due to the influence of the second presence dwelling inside him. His parents were killed when he was still young and none of his other relatives spoke up when he was taken into an orphanage.
From then on he lived in the so-called "House of Fianna", which consisted of mainly small children. Leo is bad at dealing with children, so he almost always spend time on his own in the big library of the "House of Fianna" and read every single book in it. He himself
says that books were his "sanctuary" and that "only with them he can completely forget himself".
Him being a lone wolf changes when the children of the Nighray Household come to visit the "House of Fianna" and Elliot Nightray decides to take a look into the library, only to find an ill-tempered Leo. From the beginning Leo had always looked like a stray, wearing shirts that looked like a sac on him and never combing his hair, with his bangs completely hiding his eyes "so as not to see the world".
However, Leo is exactly what Elliot had always been searching for, a friend and EQUAL, and that is exactly
but even though Leo rebuffed Elliot countless times, Elliot always ended up coming back.
In the end, Leo grew fond of Elliot and accepted his offer to be his servant.
From then on their bond only grows and Leo later states that he'd "kill every enemy of Elliot in an instance, even if the enemy would turn out to be him."
Leo is able to play the piano very well, even better than Elliot, besides being self-taught. Another feature of him is his knowledge of the language of flowers. One day when Elliot composes a piano piece and states that it's name is "Statice", Leo implies to know that the name of the flower means "something that never changes". After that Elliot decides to dedicate the piece to Leo. Leo returns the present by also dedicating Elliot a piece, which he calls "Lacie".
Later it is revealed that during an incident, Elliot and Leo were dragged into a cause where Elliot was deadly wounded by a chain called "Humpty Dumpty". Leo, at a panic what to do, got instructions from the voices inside his head, to have Elliot make a contract with "Humpty Dumpty" so
that he'd be saved.
Leo follows the instructions and at the next morning, he's the only one who remembers the whole incident anymore. These thoughts drive him crazy, because he always had been the odd one, as he says himself, and is proven to be the weird one once more.
After that a killer named "the Headhunter" , that slices people's head off, appears and turns out to be Elliot. Elliot kills his older brothers, because they planned to get rid of Leo, due to Leo's seemingly bad influence on Elliot. Elliot doesn't remember that he's the one who killed them, however Leo knows and drowns in his guilt. When Elliot finally realizes he is the Headhunter, he has already no other path as to finally die.
Leo, having lost everything dear to him and having parted with Elliot in a fight, loses his mind and decides to become "Glen" (the other presence within him) completely, for "Leo doesn't exist anymore". However it is
shown that he cries remembering Elliot several times, when he is presented Elliot's last words - "I'm sorry, Leo."- and is reminded of Elliot's existence by Oz.
After that he becomes Glen completely.
To finally come to my opinion about Leo Baskerville;
Leo is so fascinating to me, because he is someone very similar to me. Leo seems very complicated, but he actually is very simple. With nothing left after his family is dead, he drowns himself in stories as to forget about himself and shuts himself out of the reality completely.
When he meets Elliot, his savior, he meets the one person that is willing to come back again and again for him, the only person that honestly cares for him anymore, as an equal and a friend. Not out of pity, or of an act of goodheartedness, but just because of Leo.
Leo from then on dedicates his life to Elliot and it drives him insane when he's the one 'guilty' of Elliot's life,
when he only wanted to save the one soul dear to him, even if only for a moment longer.
After Elliot is dead, Leo thinks he has nothing left to live for anymore, so he thinks "Leo" ceads to exist.
I don't REALLY know why he fascinates me so much.
I can relate to him and I find it amazing how devoted he was to his master. Loyalty is a really rare feature nowadays. Leo was always, and will always be my favorite character, because he's so very alive and human.
