So I've been watching the first episode of Shingeki no Kyojin today...and was really looking forward to it!
Here is the review of the first episode ~
The Story
'On that day, mankind received a grim reminder. We lived in fear of the Titans and were disgraced to live inside these cages we called walls.'
In a town built inside a 50 metres high massive wall a young boy called Eren lived with his mother, father and sister in fear of the huge monsters called Titans that once attacked the town and destroyed it completely 100 years ago. Though it's been 100 years since the Titans have attacked, humans still fear them and a troup of them go outside the walls regularly to track them down. But recently those attacks have been failing and more mankind has died- more than ever and the situation worsens day by day.
- The Beginning -
At the beginning we see Eren and his sister Mikasa pick up wood for their house. They have a little talk about the Titans and how Eren wants to join the troup that's meant to kill them. However his family is against it after seeing how many dead bodies have been brought back since the last time they were sent out. After an arguement Eren runs away and is followed by his sister. They meet a friend of them, a blonde boy called Armin, who is beaten up by some older kids because he was saying that 'one day even the massive walls around the town would break'. But the people in the town believe that the walls were built by God so every curiosity about the outside-world is forbidden by the council. They have to live inside the walls without knowing about the outside. The kids who are beating up Armin run away after seeing Mikasa behind Eren and so they take Armin with them and go to a near river.
Eren tells Armin that he has told his parents about the plan of going out to fight and they have a chat about how it's unbelievable that people can be happy like this, be drunk every day just to forget the world they're living in. Just as they're talking about it, a flash strikes the sky and some kind of earthquake is shaking the town.
They see that a Titan's hand is on a wall and the whole town is silentstill for a moment before breaking out in panic. Outside the walls in a more than 50 metres tall Titan waiting who then breaks a hole into the walls, so that all the smaller Titans are coming inside too and attack the town.
People are dying everywhere as Mikasa and Eren run to their house to save their mother who is still in the house, since their father left for a trip before. But as they find their mother, she is already buried under the wood of their broken down house and tells the children to go on without her.
However they are set on rescuing her so their mother begs an old friend of the kids passing by, Hannes, to take the kids away. At first Hannes is set on killing the Titan in front of the house and recueing all three, but is too scared to move after seeing the monster and ends up running away with only Eren and Mikasa who are still unable to accept letting their mother alone.
The episode ends with Eren seeing the Titan eating his mother and being reminded of how the Titans already once broke down the whole town and are about to do it a second time. About how the humans are forced to live in the cages called walls.
The Characters
Our maincharacters are Eren, Mikasa and Armin.
Eren is the typical curious good-for-nothing who wants to be the hero despite being weak at first. I hope, though, that as with all those 'curious good-for-nothings who want to be a hero despite being weak at first's Eren will also develop during the anime to being a mature guy who won't give up as easily.
Eren is the son of the man who has already once successfully fought a plague of Titans long ago so I guess we'll see a heroic comeback from his father or anything during the anime and also see Eren being compared
to his father with his actions.
His sister Mikasa is one really tough girl. She helps Eren carry the wood which normally isn't a girl's job and the kids beating up Armin run away after not seeing Eren but HER. But she's also the one most scared of Eren going to the troup of people who fight against the Titans since she can't bear to keep it a secret and is all shoken up. She also insists on recueing her mother until the very end when they're kinda kid-napped by Hannes. We still don't know much about her though since she's a quiet girl and doesn't talk much. I expect her to be a good sidekick to Eren.
Last but not least we have Armin who is the most afraid of the Titans but also is clever enough to know from the beginning that the walls will break one day. He is the most helpless as it actually happens then and runs away letting Mikasa and Eren alone before they run to heir own house. Armin has the guts to speak his opinion honestly but still is pretty scared I guess. I don't know why I have this feeling but I somehow expect him to die somewhere around the anime... I also hope he'll make a kinda heroic development.
The Review
I was really fascinated by the first episode of Shingeki no Kyojin *what by the way means as much as 'Attack on Titan'*. I can feel it's a bright star on the anime again after the summer-season hadn't brought that
many good animes so far - at least in my opinion.
It's debute also reminded me of Sword Art Online, not only because of the new and refreshing idea the anime revolves but also because it's popularity raised just as fast. It's not yet one of the most watched animes but it sure is well known. I also like it because it has an somehow apocalypse-y feeling to it...I like those revolutionary animes.
About the drawing style...it's ...DIFFERENT. It's has something cartoonish to it but it's not like I don't like it. Let's say it matches the Titans style since they look ugly and messed up and... well. No need for more details... By the way Eren is drawn we can clearly see he is the maincharacter. *I must say he looks hawt. I think he's like 14 years old though...don't wanna date a guy that's 2 years younger than me......* The other maincharacters Mikasa and Armin also have that...particular style to them that just makes you know they're important for the plot. But I feel like also Hannes will play a bigger role later but will die sooner or later.
I just have to mention this: Opening as well as Ending are just FABULOUS. Actually my favorite OP and ED since Fairy Tail's opening "Be As One". *I don't know which opening it was...fairy tail has got 15 opening in all I think...somewhere around 15 it was...*
I really gotta praise them for that. Good work!
The only thing I didn't like about it was probably that the cliffhanger at the end was WAY too mean and YES I'm going to take a point from the results for that! Really, I nearly died there.
Well, I'm definitely going to watch Shingeki no Kyojin to the end even if it turns out to be crappy...I'M CURIOUS NOW. Alright, I'll shut up now. Here are the points.
